A celebration of female photographers
Hasselblad Heroines shines a light on female photographers around the globe as they make their mark in the photographic industry. Through these spotlights, each Heroine shares their experiences, tips, and inspiration to fellow photographers, encouraging them to bring their creative visions to life.
Anja Niemi is a Norwegian photographer who loves the act of transforming. Taking her childhood interest in acting and storytelling, Anja uses photography to bring her stories and characters to life through images in which she features herself, creating exacting self-portraits in tableaux vivants.
"When I first started taking photographs, I realised I could create stories all by myself and completely without words, it changed everything. I could finally turn my ideas into something tangible.”
She utilises natural light and editing to enhance her fictional worlds, which balance beauty and mystery, realism and theatre. By not featuring her face, Anja poses questions about identity and humanity, rather than questions about herself, her personal world remaining elusive.
